Nausea during pregnancy can be brought on by many things… an empty stomach, certain smells, motion, being tired… but what to do? At Yin and Tonic Acupuncture we have come up with some pointers to help our patients stay as comfortable as possible during this part of their pregnancy.
First: Try not to let your stomach get empty. Have lots of little snacks at the ready to nibble on throughout the day. We have found that bland crunchy snacks like pretzles, triscuits, baked pita chips etc… seem to be really helpful. Try not to let more than a few hours pass between nibblings. This is true even at night. When you wake to urinate, have a little crunchy snack on the nightstand. This will keep your blood sugar from plummeting and the nausea appearing when you wake.

Second: Some flavors really work wonders. Ginger, candied ginger, sour jolly ranchers or just the taste of sour in general can relieve symptoms.

Third: Acupuncture and acupressure. Go in twice weekly for treatment. Acupuncture can do wonders for nausea during pregnancy. You can also practice acupressure on yourself fairly easily. There is a point and inch and a half to two inches away from the wrist crease towards the elbow. If you press this spot firmly very often nausea will disappear within seconds.

Fourth: Watch what you eat. The usual suspects should be eaten in moderation of course (wheat, dairy, sugar, coffee) but also fried foods, spicy foods and anything that might induce heartburn.

There is no question that fertility can be positively effected by diet and lifestyle. At Yin and Tonic Acupuncture we start with recommending an “everything in moderation” approach. We know that the stress of adhering to a super strict diet can have much more adverse effects on the body than the occasional piece of chocolate cake. That said we do have some general guidelines we would like to share with those who are interested.

First: moderation to elimination of the ‘usual suspects’

wheat, dairy, sugar, coffee/caffeine, alcohol, artificial sweeteners.

A diet rich in leafy green veggies, lean (organic if possible) meats and fruit is always a healthy way to go.

We discourage ‘raw’ food diets during the time of conception and gestation.

As far as exercise, again: moderation. Low impact aerobics, yoga, weights, swimming are all wonderfully healthy activities as long as they are done in moderation. Women who are athletes and/or have very low body fat tend to run into problems with fertility. We recommend that these patients increase their calorie intake and decrease the frequency of their workouts while trying to conceive. Many times runners find that by gaining a little weight and running a little less they are able to conceive naturally (even when they were being encouraged by their doctors to move on to IUI and even IVF).

At Yin and Tonic Acupuncture we want to salute Sami S. David M.D. and Jill Blakeway for their wonderful new book “Making Babies”. It is an easy to understand three month diet and lifestyle regimen that can help boost overall health and increase fertility. Nowadays it is very easy for patients to get caught up in more and more extreme western fertility treatments that could be unnecessary. In some cases gentle and simple changes might be the solution. Natural remedies have been used for centuries to help women conceive and generally speaking have little or no side effects. Certainly diet and exercise improvements can’t be bad! So if you are encountering fertility hurdles think about picking up a copy of Jill Blakeway and Sami S. David’s book “Making Babies” as it could be a real asset to the pursuit of a beautiful family.
For those patients who are running into more complex fertility challenges we would also like to recommend a couple of other essential books:
“Is Your Body Baby Friendly?” by Alan E. Beer, M.D. This book is of the essence for any practitioner working in the field of fertility as well as patients who want to know as much as possible about new developments in treatment. It is especially useful for patients who have experienced repeated IVF failure, recurrent pregnancy loss and unexplained fertility. It explores the negative role that the immune system may play in fertility as well as tests and treatments.
“In Vitro Fertilization. The A.R.T. of Making Babies” by Geoffrey Sher, M.D., Virginia Marriage Davis, R.N., Jean Stoess, M.A. This is an excellent guide to the ins and outs of an IVF cycle. It can be a very helpful guide for patients about to go through an IVF cycle as it can give them an idea of what to expect. It can also be very helpful in understanding what drugs are given when and why, as well as the timing of treatments.
“Taking Charge of Your Fertility” by Toni Weschler. This is our favorite book on fertility. If you haven’t read it please do so as soon as you can and pass it on to every woman you know. It is an essential guide to understanding a woman’s fertility. Perhaps it’s most valuable asset is the section on reading and understanding a Basal Body Temperature Chart. Understanding temperature changes during the cycle (as well as cervical fluid changes) can be used to know exactly when to try to conceive even more accurately than expensive ovulation predictor kits. The same knowledge can be used for women who are not trying to conceive and would like alternatives to the pill and other forms of birth control.
Please feel free to email us through the contact section of our website if you have any questions about fertility. We are here to help.

Here are some helpful tips to keep progesterone from being such a pain in the butt. Literally.

First: Before injecting, warm the progesterone up to body temperature. Probably the easiest was is to put it in your bra for half an hour before injection. Progesterone is dissolved in oil and cool oil is more viscous. Warm oil moves out of the needle easier and absorbs easier.

Second: Ice the area. Many fertility clinics say not to ice the area before injecting and we certainly understand why… if the whole site is cold the progesterone is going to have a very hard time absorbing. Icing a very small area however is not a problem. Try using the corner of an ice cube for about a minute to numb just the area of the injection. This will make the shot itself as pain free as possible.

Third: Do it quick. The faster the needle passes through the skin the less painful it will be.

Finally: Use a heating pad on the area for twenty minutes or so. This will increase the circulation to the area and help the progesterone absorb completely. No more painful lumps!
